The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science offers several courses to undergraduate students. Undergraduates can take courses individually or as part of a Minor in Meteorology which ca prepare them for careers in Meteorology and Earth Sciences or for graduate studies in these areas.

Three Minor tracks are available:

  • Minor in Atmospheric Sciences
  • Minor in Meteorology
  • Minor in Atmospheric Chemistry
The Minor in Atmospheric Sciences is the most suitable preparation for graduate studies in Meteorology. For more details contact the Undergraduate Advisor, R. Hudson at hudson at atmos.umd.edu
The following undergraduate courses are offered in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science:
  • AOSC 123: Global Change - Implications of Global Climate Change
  • AOSC 200: Weather and Climate - Atmospheric Sciences and Forecasting
  • AOSC 201: Weather and Climate Lab - Lab for AOSC 200
  • AOSC 375: Introduction to the Blue Ocean
  • AOSC 400: The Atmosphere: Theory, Observations, and Prediction
  • AOSC 401: Global Environment - The Atmosphere, Ocean, Biosphere
  • AOSC 431: Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers I
  • AOSC 432: Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers II
  • AOSC 434: Air Pollution - Generation, Transport, and Removal of Air Pollutants
  • AOSC 499: Special Problems in Atmospheric Sciences - Research in Atmospheric Sciences
Undergraduates can also pursue a bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences, which has a specialty inMeteorology. The Advisor for the Physical Sciences program Tom Gleason can be contacted at (tgleason@physics.umd.edu). Students who anticipate careers in Meteorology should consult the undergraduate advisor of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science as early as possible in their studies.

Please note: The Minor Programs are an outgrowth of the previously known Citation Programs. Students that were enrolled in the Citation Program during the transition period to Minor have the option to switch to Minor or to complete the Citation program.
