Data Assimilation and Ensemble Forecasting at the Met Office: Current Status and Future Plans

Dr. Dale Barker
UK Met Office

The Data Assimilation and Ensembles (DAE) Section of the Met Office's Forecasting R&D programme employs around 45 people working on a variety of R&D projects associated with our global and regional NWP applications. This talk will give a brief review of Met Office current DAE capabilities, which are based on operational global/regional implementations of 4D-Var and ETKF-based Met-Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System (MOGREPS). Plans to enhance DA capabilities through increased resolution, coupled variational/ensemble DA and improved covariance models will be presented.
