America's Climate Choices, Maryland's Climate Choices

Professor Donald F. Boesch

University of Maryland
Center for Environmental Science

America’s Climate Choices was a multifaceted assessment of the National Academies at the request of Congress to identify how the United States should respond to the challenges of climate change.  It included reports on limiting the magnitude of future climate change, adapting to the impacts of climate change, advancing the science of climate change and informing effective decisions and actions related to climate change and a concluding comprehensive review of the choices before us.  When the study was initiated it seemed that the US was on the brink of enacting legislation to address climate change, but this not the case now and present prospects are challenging.  So how might these reports by influential?  Similarly, the State of Maryland launched a Climate Change Commission and in 2009 enacted a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act.  But how much can be accomplished without national policies and actions?  The status of Maryland’s efforts from greenhouse gas reduction to adaptation to education will be briefly reviewed.
