El Nino in SODA 1871-2008

Prof. Benjamin Giese

Texas A&M UNiversity
Department of Oceanography

This talk presents results from a new reanalysis of ocean climate variability driven by winds from the atmospheric 20CR reanalysis. This talk presents the first effort to characterize ENSO variability stretching back into the 19th century. The talk will also describe changes in the historical ocean observing systems (e.g. ocean stations, shipboard SST) and the limits of what we can learn from these historical observations.
