Title: The Regional Arctic Reanalysis (RARE)

Abstract:

The Arctic Ocean/sea ice system plays crucial roles in climate
variability and change by controlling the northern end of the oceanic
overturning circulation, the equator to pole air pressure gradient,
and the earth’s energy balance. It is also experiencing astonishing
climate change. Yet the historical ocean observation set is sparse
and inhomogeneous (partly due to international tensions), while ocean
dynamics has challengingly fine (<10 km) horizontal and (1m) vertical
scales. This talk introduces the unique regional Arctic Ocean/sea ice
reanalysis (RARE) which combines constraints of mesoscale ocean
dynamics, historical observations, surface meteorology, and
continental runoff in a data assimilation framework to reconstruct
historical ocean/sea ice variability. First results of this
initiative: RARE1, spanning the 41-year period 1980-2020, will be
presented.

Bio:

Like many oceanographers I grew up in the midwest. I was a computer
science major as an undergraduate at Princeton at a time when there
were still faculty working on analogue computers (I guess you've never
heard of those). I remained to complete my PhD at Princeton (with
classmate Sumant Nigam). After a postdoc at Harvard I came to
University of Maryland for a short stay to help a group of climate
scientists (who later moved to George Mason) develop a coupled
land-ocean-atmosphere model. For much of my early career I focussed
on the climate dynamics of the tropics, but in recent years I've
gotten interested in Arctic climate, partly motivated by issues
related to climate change. This seminar is one result of that
interest.
