Title:

Modeling Across Scales to Understand Changes in Tropical Cyclone Precipitation with Climate Change

Abstract:

Tropical cyclones (TCs) cause major damage every year around the world from their high winds, storm surge, and extreme precipitation. While both physical theory and climate models suggest that TC precipitation will increase due to climate change, only recently have studies come out trying to understand the causes and complexities of this increase. Additionally, multiple recent studies using about 20 years of satellite-derived precipitation products have found a decreasing temporal trend in TC inner-core precipitation and an increasing temporal trend in outer rainband precipitation. My talk will discuss my research on the impacts of climate warming on TC precipitation, including the discrepancy between observed trends and model output, using a modeling across scales approach.

Bio:

Alyssa Stansfield is a NSF Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Colorado State University, working with Dr. Kristen Rasmussen. Her current project involves using idealized high-resolution models to understand how the three-dimensional precipitation structures within tropical cyclones (TCs) respond to sea surface temperature warming. She graduated with her PhD from Stony Brook University in May of 2022. Her dissertation focused on assessing the representation of TCs in climate models and exploring the complexity of factors that control how TC precipitation is impacted by climate change. Alyssa is also interested in science communication and was recently accepted into the Sustainability Leadership Fellows Program at CSU, which trains and empowers early career scientists to effectively communicate their research to a variety of audiences.
