Title
Visualizing NO2 air pollution at neighborhood scales from space
Abstract
In this seminar, Dr. Goldberg will explain how he and his group use satellite data to characterize global air pollution at neighborhood scales. His work primarily revolves around two satellite instruments: the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and the Tropospheric Emissions Monitoring of POllution (TEMPO). Both instruments measure a toxic air pollutant, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) that results primarily from fossil fuel combustion. NO2 is closely linked to other atmospheric pollutants, such as ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM2.5), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Results from his research have identified sources of air pollution that have been previously mischaracterized or unknown, ultimately leading to better state and federal regulatory policies and guidance.
Bio
Dr. Goldberg is currently an Assistant Research Professor at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Dr. Goldberg graduated from the University of Maryland with his Ph.D. and completed his post-doctoral research at Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory, in Chicago, IL. His research has been funded by NASA, NOAA, EPA, HEI, and state agencies.
