Title: Connecting regional air pollution with climate change near and far

Abstract:

By interacting with radiation and clouds, particulate air pollution can alter climate locally and around the globe.  In turn, climate change can influence the emissions, chemistry, deposition, and meteorology that shape spatiotemporal air pollutant distributions. Knowledge of air pollution-climate linkages can reveal otherwise inadvertent synergies and tradeoffs that arise, for example, from health-motivated controls on national air pollutant emissions.  I will highlight three examples from recent and ongoing work on air pollution-climate interactions: (1) local and remote responses to declining regional anthropogenic aerosol and precursor emissions, (2) summertime eastern U.S. air pollution responses to rising long-lived greenhouse gases, and (3) fine particles and related meteorology over India during the latter half of the 20th century. For each example, I will describe different chemistry-climate modeling approaches we are using to detect anthropogenic influence amidst natural climate variability.

Bio:

Arlene Fiore is the Peter H. Stone and Paola Malanotte Stone Professor in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences as of July 2021.  Before moving to MIT, she was a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University for ten years, and was previously a research scientist at the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.  Her research seeks to understand processes that control two-way interactions between air pollutants and the climate system and the sensitivity of atmospheric chemistry to different sources and sinks, at scales ranging from urban to global and daily to decadal.
