Title

Climate change impact on the tropical Pacific and global tropical cyclones

Abstract

The equatorial tropical Pacific, characterized by the western Pacific warm pool and eastern Pacific cold tongue, is known to modulate global tropical cyclone activities, especially through its interannual variability, the El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In response to greenhouse gas warming, this zonal sea-surface temperature gradient is expected to change, both its mean state and its ENSO variability, and will consequently affect the projections of global tropical cyclone activity.  In this presentation, I will discuss the sensitivity of global TC projections to changes of the tropical Pacific mean-state as well as the changes in conventional ENSO-TC relationship due to global warming in the CMIP6 models.

Bio

I am an Associate Research Professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University. I study tropical cyclones and climate. I received my B.S, and M.S. in Atmospheric Science at the National Taiwan University, and my Ph.D at the Meteorology and Physical Oceanography division of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami. There are three distinct, but connected themes in my current research: subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) tropical cyclone prediction, climate change impacts on regional tropical cyclone activity, and tropical cyclone risk. Across all of these themes, I seek to improve our understanding of the physical processes driving tropical cyclones and apply this understanding to the development, evaluation and use of predictive models. In 2021, I was awarded the Natural Hazards Early Career Award from the American Geophysical Union. In 2022, I received a Young Scientist award from Palisades Geophysical Institute (PGI).
