Title

Ocean heat transport by AMOC and gyres

Abstract

Heat transport in the Atlantic is everywhere northward, and exhibits strong multidecadal variability at some latitudes. It is often of interest to partition this heat transport into two components: the heat transport by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the heat transport by the gyres. The most common method for performing this separation is a simple geometric method that uses the zonal mean in depth space. I will discuss possible problems with this method and describe a newer physically-motivated method. I will then use the new method to evaluate the components of heat transport variability at multiple latitudes in the CESM large ensemble, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method. These methods could be applied to a wide variety of other tracers in the future.

Bio

Jones is a Physical Oceanographer whose research focusses on ocean dynamics, and explores how the ocean transports heat and other tracers around the globe. He uses a combination of theory, ocean models and scalable analysis tools in python. Much of Jones’ work investigates the strength, geometry and variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (sometimes called the “conveyor belt” circulation), which transports heat from the surface of the tropical Pacific into the Atlantic basin, where it moves heat northward.

I am seeking someone to join my group in August 2024, either as a Masters student or as a PhD student. I recommend that incoming graduate students have taken Calculus 3 (Vector Calculus). A strong interest in looking at the earth system from a mathematical perspective is much more important than perfect grades or prestigious educational background. If you think you might be interested, please email your CV to spencerjones@tamu.edu.
