Dr. Susan Solomon

Lee and Geraldine Martin Professor of Environmental Science, MIT

Title: Two Environmental Successes:  Why They Give Us Hope For The Planet

Abstract:

Humans have faced a series of national and global environmental challenges in the past half-century, including smog, ozone depletion, lead in gas and paint, pesticides and much more.     This talk reveals how combinations of science, public policy, industry participation, and the engagement of citizens succeeded in addressing two past environmental challenges.   Finally, I probe how the lessons learned help us understand how to better manage today’s pressing environmental problem, climate change.

Bio:

Susan Solomon is the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professor of Environmental Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  She is internationally recognized as a leader in atmospheric science, particularly for her insights in explaining the cause of the Antarctic ozone "hole". She and her colleagues have made important contributions to understanding chemistry/climate coupling, including leading research on the irreversibility of global warming linked to anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, and on the influence of the ozone hole on the climate of the southern hemisphere. Her current focus is on issues relating to both atmospheric chemistry and climate change. Dr. Solomon was the co-chair of The Physical Science Basis contribution of Working Group I to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which along with Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Among her many other honors, recently Dr. Solomon is the recipient of the 2021 Award for Chemistry in Service to Society from the National Academy of Sciences for “influential and incisive application of atmospheric chemistry to understand our most critical environmental issues — ozone layer depletion and climate change — and for her effective communication of environmental science to leaders to facilitate policy changes.”
