Title: Urbanization impact on regional climate and extreme weather
Abstract:
Urban environments lie at the confluence of social, cultural, and economic activities and have unique biophysical characteristics due to continued infrastructure development that generally replaces natural landscapes with built-up structures. The majority of studies on urban perturbation of local weather and climate have centered on the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Besides the UHI and heat wave, urbanization also impacts atmospheric moisture, wind, boundary layer structure, cloud formation, dispersion of air pollutants, precipitation, and storms. In this presentation, I will first give an overview of research in urbanization impact on regional climate and extreme weather based on both observations and modeling approaches. Then I will highlight the results from a few urban modeling studies supported by different projects. Finally, I will discuss the major research gaps and challenges in understanding of the impacts of urbanization, and provide perspective and recommendations for future research priorities and directions.
Bio:
Yun Qian, a Laboratory Fellow and also the Leader for Earth System Modeling Group (with >70 staff members) in Atmospheric Science & Global Change Division, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His research mainly has been focusing on developing and using atmospheric and land surface models to advance understanding and modeling of human influence on the atmosphere, land, cryosphere, and water. Research areas include 1) Aerosol model development and aerosol-climate interactions, 2) Impact of snow and glacier impurities, 3) Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in atmosphere modeling, and 4) Human impact on atmosphere-land-water interactions.
