Title

State of the Climate in 2025

Abstract

Each year, hundreds of scientists from across the globe set out on an adventure to capture the pulse of Earth’s climate.  From high in the sky to deep below the ocean surface, these researchers, armed with their data, document what is happening within the Earth system.  These annual assessments have been compiled into a peer-reviewed publication and released each summer for the past three decades.  The latest release, State of the Climate in 2025, was published in August 2026 and featured contributions from 625 scientists across 60 countries detailing how various global climate indicators in 2025 compared to previous years.  Notably, key indicators such as greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean heat content, and global sea level were all highest on record. This talk will highlight how the State of the Climate report differs from other global climate assessments, explain the process behind producing the report, and present significant highlights from the 2025 findings.

Bio

Dr. James Reagan is a Physical Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).  His work primarily focuses on ocean data stewardship and related product development.  He leads the World Ocean Database, an in situ ocean profile database that contains over 20 million profiles.  His research interests include ocean salinity and freshwater variability and their relation to the global hydrological cycle, ocean heat content and its connection to Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI), and decadal ocean climate variability.  He received his B.S. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University (2008) and earned both his M.S. (2010) and Ph.D. (2025) in Physical Oceanography from UMD’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science.
