Title

The Subseasonal and Seasonal Variability of the Northern Hemisphere Latitudes

Abstract

Recent advancements in understanding the subseasonal and seasonal variability outside of the tropics will be discussed. I will introduce the multi-channel singular spectral analysis (MSSA) method used to isolate the variability in the extra-tropics, present the oscillatory modes dominating the extra-tropics on these time scales and their relationship with tropical variability, and discuss the implications of midlatitude oscillatory modes for the predictability of surface air temperature (T2m) at subseasonal-to seasonal timescales.

Bio

Cristiana Stan is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences at George Mason University. She received her BS in Physics and MS in Atmospheric Physics from University of Bucharest, followed by a PhD in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University in 2005.

Her research portfolio includes more than sixty peer‑reviewed publications, among them highly cited studies recognized with the Web of Science “Highly Cited in Field” distinctions. Her work has advanced the application of super‑parameterized to global coupled climate models, explored the role of ocean–atmosphere coupling in seasonal and subseasonal predictability, and contributed to fundamental insights into intraseasonal variability and its global impacts. She has also developed novel diagnostic for evaluating MJO teleconnections and created machine‑learning-based tools for signal processing and improving prediction systems.

Cristiana is deeply engaged in national and international scientific leadership. She serves as Vice‑Chair of the World Climate Research Programme’s Joint Scientific Committee and is a member of steering groups and advisory panels for the World Weather Research Programme, Centers for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E), and NOAA’s Unified Forecast System (UFS) initiative, where she co‑chairs both the S2S and Medium‑range Weather application teams.
