AOSC Environmental Monitoring Lab has been awarded a $20,700 grant

A student research team in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Science (AOSC) Environmental Monitoring Lab has been awarded a $20,700 grant from the University of Maryland Sustainability Fund to develop and test a "Wood Vault" carbon removal system. The project is led by AOSC senior Duncan Santerre under the guidance of Professor Ning Zeng, where the lab will investigate burying woody biomass in anaerobic conditions to prevent decay and store carbon long term. The research will be conducted both in the lab and at the UMD Turfgrass Research Facility, where the team will build and monitor a pilot vault using solar powered environmental sensors. The project provides hands on research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students while exploring scalable methods of biomass carbon removal to help address climate change.
