Title: Brick Kilns, Biomass, Traffic, and Trash – Air Quality in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Abstract:

Air quality in South Asia frequently exceeds guidelines set by the World Health Organization posing a health risk to the population in this region.  To better understand the drivers and sources of air pollution, and more specifically particulate matter, in this region the Nepal Ambient Monitoring and Source Testing Experiment (NAMaSTE) campaign brought together a multi-university collaboration with in-country partners to characterize the gas and particle composition of key sources of air pollution in South Asia, and apply that source characterization to measurements of ambient air pollution from multiple sites in and around the Kathmandu Valley.  The resulting source apportionment of particulate matter provides key information for policy and development strategies to reduce the burden of air pollution in the region.

Bio:

Dr. Peter DeCarlo is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering.  Dr. DeCarlo has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, and a BS in Biochemistry. He uses state-of-the-art instrumentation to measure the chemical composition of particulates and gases in in the air we breathe to better understand the intersection between energy, air quality, health, and climate impacts of human emissions. He has made air quality and climate related measurements from planes, trucks, and stationary sites all over the world to better understand direct emissions, sources, and subsequent chemical reactions of pollutants in the atmosphere. He also is interested in the intersection of science and policy and was an AAAS Science Policy Fellow at the US EPA. Dr. DeCarlo is the current Department of State Air Quality Fellow for the Kathmandu Embassy, has served as a representative to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and as an advisory board member for the Thirdhand Smoke Research Consortium and PA Physicians for Social Responsibility.  Dr. DeCarlo has co-authored over 110 peer reviewed publication and has been identified as a highly cited researcher by Clarivate Analytics.
