Title: Disentangling the Oceanic Circulation

Abstract:

Large-scale currents and mesoscale eddies pervade the ocean and play a central role in the general circulation and climate. The multi-scale nature of oceanic flow, with scales ranging from O(104) km down to O(1) mm, presents a major difficulty in understanding, modeling, and predicting circulation and mixing. I will discuss an coarse-graining approach we have been developing to unravel these complex flows, which is rooted in Renormalization Group in physics and Large Eddy Simulation in turbulence modeling. The approach is more versatile and powerful than the 'mean-eddy' decomposition traditionally used in physical oceanography, and more broadly applicable than spectral, or Fourier-based, analysis. It allows for understanding and quantifying the dynamics + processes at different scales at every geographic location on the globe. I will present examples on how this has enabled us to probe the cascade of energy across scales, baroclinic instability, wind forcing, and also to measure local power spectra in realistic settings using data from altimetry, scatterometry, reanalysis, and high-resolution models.
