Title: From Smog to Stratospheric Aerosols: NOAA’s Atmospheric Composition Capabilities and Applications

Abstract:

The atmosphere is composed of many different types of trace gases and aerosol particles that affect the air we breathe, the health of our ecosystems, and our changing climate. As our Nation’s environmental intelligence agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is responsible for observing and modeling atmospheric composition and its impacts on air quality, weather, and climate. This presentation will discuss NOAA’s capabilities to quantify atmospheric composition and their applications to understanding environmental issues facing our society. Topics covered will include NOAA research on air quality in the US and across the world, next-generation satellite observing systems for atmospheric composition, incorporating atmospheric composition in NOAA’s operational forecasting systems, and understanding climate forcing from natural and anthropogenic aerosols.

Bio:

Dr. Gregory Frost is a Supervisory Research Chemist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL). Dr. Frost received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1995. He leads NOAA CSL’s Regional Chemical Modeling Program, which uses observations and models to understand the impacts of emissions and atmospheric chemistry on air quality, weather, and climate. Dr. Frost is the Atmospheric Composition and Chemistry (ACC) Liaison in NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. He manages the NOAA Earth’s Radiation Budget Initiative, a Congressionally directed research program investigating natural and human activities that may alter the reflectivity of the atmosphere and impact the Earth system. He is the User Scientist for the NOAA Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) Mission’s Atmospheric Composition Instrument, ACX. Dr. Frost leads several ACC-related activities within NOAA’s Unified Forecast System.
