Title
Climate Change, Air Pollution and Public Heath: Millennial Concerns Connected via Aerosols through Intertwined Relationships
Abstract
Of little doubt, climate change, air pollution and public heath are among the primary concerns to the public and scientists alike. While each has its own unique causes, aerosol is a sole common factor linking them through various intertwined relationships. A large fraction of aerosol originates from human activities that are the sources of many detrimental pollutants including both primary pollutant (black carbon) and most of secondary pollutants (sulfate, nitrate, etc.) that have considerable adverse impact on public health. Aerosols affect both climate changes of decadal scales and day-to-day weather including severe storms. By means of both conventional physics-based approaches (observational and modeling) and machine-based artificial intelligence (AI), we have tackled several frontier issues associated with these themes and gained further insights into the mechanisms behind the complex interaction mechanism. In this seminar, I’ll give a brief historical perspective and highlight some recent findings.
Bio
Zhanqing Li is a distinguished university professor at the University of Maryland. He has engaged in wide range of studies concerning climate, atmospheric physics and chemistry, environment and health. He developed a suite of remote sensing algorithms and products of radiation budget, aerosol, cloud, precipitation, air pollutants, fire and land parameters; resolved some important scientific issues concerning earth’s radiation budget, the roles of aerosol and clouds in altering earth’s energy and water cycles. He has published over 400 articles, 30000 citations and h-index of 91 by Google Scholar, and mentored dozens of PhD students. He is a fellow of AAAS, AGU and AMS and received ~15 awards and honors from US, Canada and Germany. He has served as an editor of JGR-Atmosphere, ACP; and the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the National Academies, among others.
