Robert Atlas
Adjunct Professor
Director Emeritus/NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory
Author of “Weather Forecaster to Research Scientist” published by the American Meteorological Society

Summary of Professional Achievements: Expertise in synoptic and dynamic meteorology, atmospheric and oceanic modeling, remote sensing, air-sea interaction, and weather prediction. Key member of the team that first demonstrated the beneficial impact of quantitative satellite data (temperature soundings and satellite surface winds) on numerical weather prediction. Leading expert on Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs), and the first person to have conducted OSSEs for proposed satellite observing systems in which the quantitative results of the OSSEs were confirmed after the launch of the instruments. Former member of Scientific Steering Groups for GEWEX, THORPEX, and USWRP, and the NASA Ocean Vector Winds Team. Former councilor of the American Meteorological Society, Head of the NASA Data Assimilation Office, Chairman of U.S. WOCE Advisory Group for model-based air-sea fluxes, and Project Scientist for the Zephyr Wind Lidar, and GTWS. Currently serve as Chair of the American Meteorological Society’s Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Ocean and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS) Conference.
